THANK YOU!

Thank you for attending Year Up Bay Area’s virtual graduation ceremony!

We hope you enjoyed celebrating this milestone moment with the graduates who made up our Class of Winter 2021 and their families! As we saw, our graduates delivered on Year Up’s mission to close the Opportunity Divide—the gap that exists between many young adults in our community and the economic mainstream.

Welcome to the Year Up Bay Area’s Commencement Website!

Dear Class of Winter 2021 Graduates,

You are walking into a world that needs you. It needs your ambition, your courage and resilience, your
thoughtfulness and integrity. This past year has neither been fair nor kind, yet you weathered through and
have come out different and better versions of yourselves. There are no shortcuts to success, and your
cohort knows this more than any that have come before you; the need to ignite your internal motivation
and empower others to achieve their potential is key to our collective success.

The Site Directors from across the Bay Area have spoken at length about the incredible resilience and grit
that you have had to display, and it reminded us of this story:

A man found the cocoon of a butterfly.

One day a small opening appeared. He sat and watched the butterfly for several hours as it
struggled to force its body through that little hole.

He watched until it suddenly stopped making any progress and looked like it was stuck. So the man decided to help the butterfly. He took a pair of scissors and snipped off the remaining bit of the cocoon. The butterfly then emerged easily, although it had a swollen body and small, shriveled wings.

The man did not think anything of it and sat there waiting for the wings to enlarge to support the
butterfly. But it never happened. The butterfly spent the rest of its life unable to fly, crawling around with tiny wings and a swollen body.

Despite the kind heart of the man, he did not understand that the restricting cocoon and the
struggle needed by the butterfly to get itself through the small opening, forced fluid from the body
of the butterfly into its wings.

The obstacle of pushing through the challenge is what developed the butterfly’s wings, and
prepared it for flying once out of the cocoon.

We share this story because we recognize that the circumstances that you began this program in are most
likely drastically different than where you are completing it; we sincerely hope you can see the transformation that these circumstances have helped you to achieve.

You all are about to earn jobs, excel in your education, or pursue a different path in an economy and
society that has no more playbook. It is an honor to see you all move into this next part of your journey
and help to build what this new world is going to look like in the next year, next decade, and next century.
We all are rooting for you, and the world is counting on you.

May your wings uplift you.
