In remembrance of our dear colleague, Sharon Crawford

Our beloved Year Up Bay Area colleague, Sharon Crawford, passed away on July 20th. Sharon was a member of our Student Services Team at Year Up Silicon Valley. Although she sat at the SV site, Sharon touched many hearts across Year Up and was a special member of our YUBA community. In her 6 years at YU, she was a trusted mentor and friend to many. Many of her colleagues recall her being the heart and soul of the SV site. No matter how busy the day was, she would always find a way to check on her work family, as she called it, and make sure everyone had a smile on their face. Sharon’s energy was infectious, and whether it was dancing to a song by Prince or Jill Scott, or simply laughing out loud, she kept everyone going whenever times were tough. Sharon has been noted as the epitome of “high support and high expectations” as she would always be the first in line to mentor new staff and be a sounding board to our veteran staff. Never afraid to speak her truth or share her opinion, Sharon is remembered as honest, fierce, and fearless. Our young adults in SV would call her “Mama Sharon” and she was known for her infamous carrot juice, hugs, and simply some kind words of inspiration. Sharon introduced many folks to Year Up, some who even joined as YU staff. She was a beloved grandmother, mother, and member of our Year Up family.

Welcome to the Year Up Bay Area’s Commencement Website!

Dear Class of July 2021,

Congratulations on completing your Year Up journey! Last year around this time, you were completing your Year Up application and enrollment process during very uncertain times. And here you are, five months of Learning and Development and six months of Internship later, preparing to transition into the new normal as more developed professionals.

Here’s the thing — you had it in you all along. Sometimes we have the dreams, aspirations, and goals, without the tools and resources. We know the path we’d like to take, but don’t have a roadmap. But just like California and other parts of the country as pandemic restrictions ease, it was a matter of opening doors once you were ready to make a big move. When you found yourself ready to open the door towards a new career launch, you did just that.

With the Year Up door open in September of 2021, you began to bring your full self to the table, you applied yourself to the experience, and with that, many more doors opened up. You opened up doors when you showed up to Group Coaching vulnerably and built trusting relationships with peers and colleagues. You opened up doors by taking in CDIR, BC, Skills Lab, Guest Speaker, and so much more to heart, applying your learnings in-the-moment, and setting yourself up for long-term success. You opened up doors by embracing feedback and 1:1 check-ins, most of the time on Zoom. Just think back to all the experiences, big or small, that were unlocked through this!

All that to say, over the past 12+ months, even with all the closures and distancing going on, you aimed high. You opened countless doors and did anything but distance yourself from the career you deserve. It truly goes without saying, but we’re incredibly proud of each and every one of you! It is not an easy experience regardless, but the pandemic of 2020 tested that, and you made it.

If there’s one last bit of advice as you continue opening up doors going forward, it’s this: Not all doors will easily open, but remember to keep at it. Lean on those you’ve met during this experience to stay optimistic and persist. On the other hand, not all spaces on the other side of the door will be what you expect. Stay inquisitive, aim to learn, and, most importantly, don’t be afraid to share and gain perspective to set yourself up for the next door. And remember, when one door closes another opens!

Way to open up doors toward your new normal! We can’t wait to see what you accomplish.
