Letter from Site Directors

Welcome to the Year Up Greater Boston Commencement Ceremony!

Graduates, today we are thrilled to celebrate you and all that you’ve accomplished this year. You joined Year Up at an unpredictable time as the pandemic has continued to toil on.  Yet, YOU decided now was your time to invest in yourself.  Each of you knows your story best, and each of you have persisted and overcome in pursuit of this moment. We are humbled to be here today witnessing you, talented and motivated young adults, ready to graduate and continue on in the direction of your dreams. Year Up has a rich alumni network locally in Greater Boston and across the country- a group that you’re now joining. Thank you for being exceptional Year Up ambassadors this past year and continuing to do so as you move forward in your careers.

Everyone at Year Up Greater Boston, our partners, and volunteers are thankful to have been a part of your journey. All 106 of you started this experience full of hope and expectations, eager to embark on a yearlong journey towards economic justice. Your determination and resilience have certainly inspired each of us here tonight. This year was filled with change as vaccines were introduced and civil unrest called for organizations to grow towards anti-racism. Some of you reported to internship in person while others worked virtually- ALL of you persevered. We know that your journey towards a career and higher education doesn’t stop here, but please take a moment to pause because your dedication should be celebrated!

You have learned and strengthened so many skills this past year, and now it’s time to apply your ability to communicate, collaborate, organize, and adapt as you reach your career and educational aspirations. We encourage you to continue using these skills to give back and strengthen your community. Be reflective of your time this past year and share your story with a friend that could use a ‘Year Up’ in their life. Consider how you want to leave a legacy- volunteering, mentoring, or sharing your story. Always remember your story matters, your voice matters, and you matter. As many of you have, continue to be bold and audacious as you fight for what makes you optimistic about this world.

LC Engage, LC Believe, LC Aspire, and LC Achieve, your unique path ahead is unchartered, yet we are confident you have the grit and skills to charge forward. There are countless friends and family members, corporate partners, funders, community partners, volunteers, and staff members who believe in you. You have an entire network of people cheering you on and will continue to do so as a community. Graduates, to quote Amanda Gorman’s inaugural poem- read to the nation right before you started your Year Up journey; “The new dawn blooms as we free it. For there is always light, if only we’re brave enough to see it. If only we’re brave enough to be it.”

On behalf of Year Up Greater Boston, congratulations to our resilient Class of Winter 2022!

Yours in service,

Tyra Anderson-Montina
